Joy Café Chess Competition 2020 Rules
- Entry confirmed by 10:15 8/1/20.
- All competition games usually played every Wednesday morning (10:00-12:00), Joy Café, Churchill Gardens, BH1 4HB.
- While we should have enough chess equipment on site, could those with a competition size board and pieces please bring them along if they are able to.
- We have one mechanical chess clock so please could competitors bring their own chess clock (whether mechanical or e.g. the ChessClock app)
- ‘Basic’ chess rules will apply. I propose these include the chess clock placed on the right of the board from black’s perspective, operate clock with same hand as piece is moved, the ‘en passant’ rule, ‘touch a piece, move a piece’ (including touch the King first to castle), before adjusting any piece on its square (only during your move) say ‘adjust’, ability to offer a draw while it is your move and (I propose for simplification) the same board position occurring three times gives rise to a draw and no need to record any moves.
- Players and spectators should not make any comment, ‘distract’ or ‘annoy’ (to adopt Eric Schiller’s formulation in the Rules of Chess) during games.
- Each player to play two games (one as white and one as black) against every other player during the competition, two games per week against the same person; so this year’s competition will take the form of a league.
- Who plays who will be determined by draw (prioritizing competitors in attendance on the day) as close to 10am as we can make it.
- All competition games on the clock: each player having 30 minutes each per game – maximum duration for each game – 1 hour.
- Scores to be notified to Steve (1 point for win, 0.5 for draw, 0 for loss) as soon as possible after each two games have been played. The score of each result (including results by default) will count within the competition ‘league’ table so e.g. one win and one draw for X against Y will score 1.5 for X and 0.5 for Y.
- If a player cannot attend any particular Wednesday they should please notify Steve in advance (by text if you use a mobile phone) no later than 10:00 on the Wednesday morning in question. That match may be re-scheduled: by default the following Wednesday morning or (and only with the other player’s consent – the player who didn’t attend please taking the initiative) at Joy Café, any other location or online during the week following the missed Wednesday.
- Players who miss a Wednesday morning without notifying Steve in advance will forfeit their designated games on that Wednesday 2v0.
- Players who miss two Wednesday mornings (whether or not notified in advance) will forfeit both their available points on any subsequent Wednesday they miss. This means that e.g. a competitor who knows or expects to have to miss three or four Wednesdays (even including Wednesday 8th January) can still participate in the competition but will only have their games re-scheduled on the first two Wednesdays they miss.
- When all results have been scored in accordance with these rules, any tied place will be determined by which player won the most games during the competition (whether by play or default). If, the top two places are still tied first and second place will be determined by a further two games played between these top players on the following Wednesday morning (subject to the above).
- If you have supplied Steve with an email-address he will endeavour to send you the results of each game and an updated competition table week by week.
- Any questions arising as to the interpretation of these rules to be determined by the person who dreamed these up; allowing a non-binding appeal to whoever might be willing to take on that role!
- Food and drink may be consumed during games. Enjoy!

Although all restrictions have been lifted we will be introducing the following precautions for our own safety and protection:

Chairman - Southbourne Chess Club
Following the UK Government's announcement on Monday and a discussion with the owners of Tuckton Social Club we are pleased to announce after a long 16 month period of absence, we will be returning to our chess home at Tuckton Social Club on Friday 23rd July. Our club will open at 6.30pm and it will close at its normal time around 10.30pm.
Although all restrictions have been lifted we will be introducing the following precautions for our own safety and protection:
- All windows and fire doors will be kept open to allow plenty of ventilation - we suggest you may wish to bring a jumper for the latter part of the evening although the weather forecast for our first meet up looks good (warm) at the moment.
- Tables will be laid out individually with plenty of distance between them.
- We will provide a hand sanitiser on a table by the entrance to the playing hall for you to use.
- Tuckton Social club will provide an anti-viral spray and wipes. These may be used for the chess pieces, door handles, light switches etc.
- Only a maximum of two people should be in the kitchen at any one point due to the limited space.
- For the mid evening tea break we will either open the hatch or bring the drinks (and biscuits!) to you.
- When walking around you wear a face covering but these may be removed when playing or seated.
- You provide as much distance between you and your opponent when seated at the board. No huddling over the chess board like a chess tiger, at least not for the moment.
- You play the same opponent for say half the evening then possibly change after the tea break to keep movement minimised.
- If you have a cold or feel a little under the weather that you do not come along to the club.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for our re-opening evening in just over a week's time.

10 second buzzer chess tournament -
Friday 10th September at 7.15pm
For our members, past members and prospective members, we will be holding our traditional 10 second buzzer chess tournament. For those who are new, this means the buzzer will give off a noise every 10 seconds (a different sound for White and Black) when you must play a move as White or Black. It's fast, furious yet good fun! We normally play 7 rounds.
We hope to issue prizes for the winner plus grading prizes and we may even hold a chess book sale if I can find enough chess books! If you have any unwanted chess books or DVDs, maybe prizes from previous years which can be recycled then please bring them along!

- Confirmation Martin Clancy will take over organising the B&DCL & County fixtures from 1 June
- Request for clubs to share any further good ideas for trying to encourage non-contact chess playing during this time and thus keeping interest going

Temporary closure of the club due to Government instructions
It is with regret that we have taken the decision to close the Southbourne Chess Club until further notice. This also includes our Tuesday chess at Ludo Lounge.
The health implications of COVID 19 are too severe for us to overlook the safety of all our members and must be our top priority. We look forward to welcoming you back as soon as this episode concludes. In the meantime online chess can be a good alternative.

Dorset based players do county proud in British Chess Championships at Torquay
Bournemouth Chess Club move premises.
New season starting 2 July 2019
Ambitious Bournemouth Chess Club move to Winton & will meet Tues evenings – new members always very welcome!17 June: Bournemouth Club Chair Paul Errington has announced the club has moved to Winton from Kinson and to spacious and impressive new surroundings. Club evenings will be Tuesdays, 7pm to 11pm (so no longer Monday afternoons). The address is Winton Liberal Club, 521 Wimborne Road, Winton BH9 2AW. There is parking at the back, just down a side road, explains Paul. The Liberal Club has a bar.
Their new season will start earlier than usual – on Tuesday evening, 2 July’19.
Paul Errington would like to thank 2 chess colleagues for their considerable help with this project. Martin Simons for the initial idea and suggestion of the Winton Liberal Club and also Eric Sachs for much support setting up all the arrangements. Paul commends Eric for his “valued business acumen”.
The Bournemouth Club feel their excellent new premises, more central to Bournemouth than before, give very good potential for membership expansion. They would especially like to strengthen their team in B&D 2. Their “B” team will be in B&D 4 next season, but they would also like to enter B&D 5 and again have a Bacchus team for emerging players new to league chess. So they are keen to recruit additional members of all standards. The contact is Chair Paul Errington and his number is 07769 829891.

James Forster in state of shock after winning a strong Dorset “Closed” Open at Merley, Sun 7 July
James Forster in state of shock after winning a strong Dorset “Closed” Open at Merley, Sun 7 July: According to informed sources, James was a reluctant late entrant for the Open – he felt out of practice, the season is over etc. But enter he sportingly did, fearing the worst, as the Open section was so strong. But with 3/4 he played some great chess and won!
Picture with organiser Ian Clark. Ian himself came 2nd equal with Steve Peirson.
In a most competitive Major, there was a 3 way tie – Geoff Searing, Frank Pittman and Chris Leeson
There was an excellent performance in the Intermediate by Mihail Nutu, who won with 3.5/4.
And some outstanding play saw Jim Fox score 3.5/4 to win the Minor, with Wimborne colleague David Lane 2nd.
Below are the results from the 4 sections, plus photos from the presentation.
Special thanks to Ian Clark, the overall organiser and also Martin Simons who controlled the event and provided the cooked lunch. Nikki Forster was great, working hard organising drinks all day and managing a first class lunch.
These are the prizewinners as advised by Ian and he is sending out their cheques Tues, 9 July
