26th Dorset Rapidplay Championship – Sunday 8th May – 16 Entrants to Date
You may have been thinking that as there was the 2nd Dorset Online Rapidplay tournament in March, there would not be a face-to-face Dorset Rapidplay this year.  However, Martin Simons is delighted to announce that there will be.The 26th Dorset Rapidplay Chess Championship will be held on Sunday 8th May from 11.30am to 4.30pm.
There are a few changes relative to the past few years:
  • It will be held at Merley Community Centre rather than Greyfriars
  • Accordingly the number of entrants will be limited, especially as it is being held alongside the Dorset Junior Chess Festival and we want a quiet separate room with good playing conditions
  • Entries are restricted to those aged 18 years or over.
  • The time limit is a little faster at 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment.

But much remains the same:
  • There will be 6 rounds
  • Whilst there won’t be a full lunch there will be free drinks and biscuits and snacks will be available at low cost
  • There will be guaranteed prizes, including rating and veterans prizes
  • The Championship Cup will be awarded
  • It will be a fun event!

In view of the restricted numbers, early entry is strongly advised.  The entry fee is just £10.
You can see the full details and enter here on the 26th Dorset Rapidplay page.

Friday 23 July 2021

Southbourne Chess Club will be able to resume again on Friday evenings from at Tuckton Social Club, 222 Tuckton Road Southbourne as from Friday 23rd July.  See Below for more details.

Message from the Chairman about reopening

Dear Southbourne Chess Club Member, Ludo Lounge casual player, potential and/or past Southbourne Chess Club player
Following the UK Government's announcement on Monday and a discussion with the owners of Tuckton Social Club we are pleased to announce after a long 16 month period of absence, we will be returning to our chess home at Tuckton Social Club on Friday 23rd July. Our club will open at 6.30pm and it will close at its normal time around 10.30pm.
Although all restrictions have been lifted we will be introducing the following precautions for our own safety and protection:
  • All windows and fire doors will be kept open to allow plenty of ventilation - we suggest you may wish to bring a jumper for the latter part of the evening although the weather forecast for our first meet up looks good (warm) at the moment.
  • Tables will be laid out individually with plenty of distance between them.
  • We will provide a hand sanitiser on a table by the entrance to the playing hall for you to use.
  • Tuckton Social club will provide an anti-viral spray and wipes. These may be used for the chess pieces, door handles, light switches etc.
  • Only a maximum of two people should be in the kitchen at any one point due to the limited space.
  • For the mid evening tea break we will either open the hatch or bring the drinks (and biscuits!) to you.
Whilst not mandatory, we also kindly ask:
  • When walking around you wear a face covering but these may be removed when playing or seated.
  • You provide as much distance between you and your opponent when seated at the board. No huddling over the chess board like a chess tiger, at least not for the moment.
  • You play the same opponent for say half the evening then possibly change after the tea break to keep movement minimised.
  • If you have a cold or feel a little under the weather that you do not come along to the club.
Brian Curran is hoping to set up either a Summer / Autumn individual swiss or an all play all tournament.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for our re-opening evening in just over a week's time.

We have our Annual General Meeting on Friday, 3rd September at 7.15pm. There will not be any presentation of Southbourne CC trophies as the 2019/20 internal competitions were not completed, so it is hoped that the meeting will last no longer than 45 minutes. Therefore, those who enjoy playing chess can do so from 8pm.
An agenda will be distributed at the meeting.

10 second buzzer chess tournament -
Friday 10th September at 7.15pm

For our members, past members and prospective members,  we will be holding our traditional 10 second buzzer chess tournament. For those who are new, this means the buzzer will give off a noise every 10 seconds (a different sound for White and Black) when you must play a move as White or Black. It's fast, furious yet good fun! We normally play 7 rounds.
We hope to issue prizes for the winner plus grading prizes and we may even hold a chess book sale if I can find enough chess books! If you have any unwanted chess books or DVDs, maybe prizes from previous years which can be recycled then please bring them along!

B&DCL & DCCA league fixtures are also suspended due to Coronavirus

All league fixtures in the B&DCL and DCCA are suspended. The situation will be reviewed in due course when a further update will be provided.  This is in line with the Government's announcements.
Previous note.

Martin (Simons) posted on the Dorset website last night and you might like to read it. The link is: https://www.dorsetchess.co.uk/Martin’s message includes…
Thoughts on how this current season might eventually be drawn to a close – obviously dependent on the virus pandemic subsiding etc. Ideas continue to be welcome to Martin and Ian Clark
  • Polite request to continue to be supportive of any vulnerable members, keeping in touch, offers of help with shopping and so on. For example, Southbourne have introduced a “buddy” system. Other ideas include telephone matches for those without internet access
  • Mention of Martin Clancy’s successful work to promote on-line chess through Lichess for both the Ringwood club and Dorset club members – detail is on the Ringwood club website:
    https://www.ringwoodchessclub.org.uk
  • Explanation of a project run by Ringwood’s Andy Baskett to give juniors the opportunity to play chess, on-line, in a “safe” environment through the outstanding website:www.ChessKid.com
Andy is in discussion with Junior Chess Coordinator Nikki Forster to offer to extend this exciting initiative to other junior chess clubs in the county

News on Peter Anderson taking over the Dorset website from 1 June (when Mike retires) – Peter has already started his work, including transforming the Junior Chess section, working with Nikki
  • Confirmation Martin Clancy will take over organising the B&DCL & County fixtures from 1 June
  • Request for clubs to share any further good ideas for trying to encourage non-contact chess playing during this time and thus keeping interest going
With best wishes and, as always, keep safe and well.

Temporary closure of the club due to Government instructions

It is with regret that we have taken the decision to close the Southbourne Chess Club until further notice.  This also includes our Tuesday chess at Ludo Lounge.

The health implications of COVID 19 are too severe for us to overlook the safety of all our members and must be our top priority.  We look forward to welcoming you back as soon as this episode concludes.  In the meantime online chess can be a good alternative.

Bournemouth Chess Club move premises.
New season starting 2 July 2019

Picture
Ambitious Bournemouth Chess Club move to Winton & will meet Tues evenings – new members always very welcome!17 June: Bournemouth Club Chair Paul Errington has announced the club has moved to Winton from Kinson and to spacious and impressive new surroundings. Club evenings will be Tuesdays, 7pm to 11pm (so no longer Monday afternoons). The address is Winton Liberal Club, 521 Wimborne Road, Winton BH9 2AW. There is parking at the back, just down a side road, explains Paul. The Liberal Club has a bar.
Their new season will start earlier than usual – on Tuesday evening, 2 July’19.
Paul Errington would like to thank 2 chess colleagues for their considerable help with this project. Martin Simons for the initial idea and suggestion of the Winton Liberal Club and also Eric Sachs for much support setting up all the arrangements. Paul commends Eric for his “valued business acumen”.
The Bournemouth Club feel their excellent new premises, more central to Bournemouth than before, give very good potential for membership expansion. They  would especially like to strengthen their team in B&D 2. Their “B” team will be in B&D 4 next season, but they would also like to enter B&D 5 and again have a Bacchus team for emerging players new to league chess. So they are keen to recruit additional members of all standards. The contact is Chair Paul Errington and his number is 07769 829891.

James Forster in state of shock after winning a strong Dorset “Closed” Open at Merley, Sun 7 July

Picture
James Forster in state of shock after winning a strong Dorset “Closed” Open at Merley, Sun 7 July: According to informed sources, James was a reluctant late entrant for the Open – he felt out of practice, the season is over etc. But enter he sportingly did, fearing the worst, as the Open section was so strong. But with 3/4 he played some great chess and won!
Picture with organiser Ian Clark. Ian himself came 2nd equal with Steve Peirson.
In a most competitive Major, there was a 3 way tie – Geoff Searing, Frank Pittman and Chris Leeson
There was an excellent performance in the Intermediate by Mihail Nutu, who won with 3.5/4.
And some outstanding play saw Jim Fox score 3.5/4 to win the Minor, with Wimborne colleague David Lane 2nd.
Below are the results from the 4 sections, plus photos from the presentation.
Special thanks to Ian Clark, the overall organiser and also Martin Simons who controlled the event and provided the cooked lunch. Nikki Forster was great, working hard organising drinks all day and managing a first class lunch.
These are the prizewinners as advised by Ian and he is sending out their cheques Tues, 9 July
