Details of Government statements and ECF guidance relating to COVID-19 can be found here (https://www.dorsetchess.co.uk/coronavirus-update-2/).

With regards to the B&DCL and Dorset League, club officials and players are reminded of the following guidelines:
  • All venues should provide sanitising gel
  • All venues should be well ventilated
  • Boards should be spaced well apart
  • We discourage players from gathering around boards particularly at the end of matches.
We also encourage face coverings (masks) to be worn, particularly when walking around the playing room. Should a venue insist on the wearing of face coverings (masks), the League Controller and all clubs are to be advised well in advance. Players cannot insist that their opponent wears a face covering (mask) but this can be agreed by the teams beforehand and flexibility in terms of board orders will be shown to accommodate this. Captains are encouraged to discuss this issue in advance of the match night.

Junior Chess at Southbourne Chess Club

Southbourne chess club is now open on a Friday evening from 6.30pm for both juniors and adults. Southbourne is a friendly informal club so very suitable for juniors. Martin Simons, as the chairman of Southbourne Chess Club, is very supportive of junior chess. It's a very family friendly venue which makes it ideal for young players.

This year, Southbourne Chess Club has seen an ever-growing number of young players coming along and, on any Friday, the club has between 5 and 10 juniors. Junior players range in age from around 7 years up to mid-teens.

Abilities are totally mixed from those who are complete beginners, through those with limited experience to those who are quite experienced and are playing in the local chess league teams. The club is proud to welcome all juniors (and parents) and has juniors travelling from across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and even some from further afield.

Beginners’ chess at Southbourne Chess Club

Currently, Nikki Forster is giving informal, fun chess coaching to beginners from 6.30pm on a Friday at Southbourne for about an hour or just over. The sessions cover a range of topics from the basics of how pieces move to tactics such as forks, pins and skewers and how to checkmate. The juniors also work on chess puzzles and play against each other.

To help beginners become familiar with how the pieces move, the following free Chesskid.com videos are a good starting point and are highly recommended:

Pawn level 4 https://www.chesskid.com/lessons/view/meet-the-king
Pawn level 5 https://www.chesskid.com/lessons/view/meet-the-pawn
Pawn level 6 https://www.chesskid.com/lessons/view/meet-the-knight

Lots of opportunity for more experienced juniors

The more experienced juniors are enjoying playing each other across the board on a Friday evening and playing adult members of the chess club. There is often an opportunity for them to receive coaching from some of these other regular adult players during this time.

Southbourne Chess Club also has juniors regularly playing for the club in the B&DCL league matches, representing teams at all levels from the D team up to the A team.

The club also has a team in the B&DCL Bacchus League which is aimed at junior and inexperienced chess players and, Southbourne, strongly encourages as many juniors as possible to play in these matches (the time control is 60 minutes per player). The club sees this as important in the junior’s chess development.

Interesting Chess Articles

Unlike many other games, playing chess does not involve an element of chance: The winner is whoever has the best strategy to outplay their opponent. It’s a game that requires a lot of thinking, and yet, while chess demands more of the player than many other games, playing chess is a popular pastime around the world. Millions of people play chess, from those who enjoy casual play in their home, online, or with a local chess club to those who play competitively in major tournaments. And since people of any age can compete for rankings and championships, even at the national or international level, the game of chess attracts players ranging from young children to seniors.
