All Club members are eligible to play in various events*:
(1) Club Championship. Pairings picked every three weeks or so during the winter months (League games take precedence).
(2) All Play All competition. Although you're not obliged to play each week, this is a good opportunity to get competitive games in as often as you want against players of all strengths. (League and Championship games take precedence)
(3) Bournemouth League. We currently have five teams playing in the Bournemouth and District League see www.dorsetchess.co.uk website for details. Everyone who wishes to represent the Club in a team will be invited to do so.
(4) Dorset League. We currently have no teams playing in the Dorset League, see. www.dorsetchess.co.uk website for details.
(5) Southampton League. Some of our members currently play in the Southampton League for Ringwood. See www.sotonchessleague.org.uk website for details.
(6) Two Towns match. Just before the beginning of the season it is a tradition that Bournemouth and Poole players compete over 30 boards or so, as a warm up to the forthcoming season. This is a chance to meet with friends old and new in the area and is usually held at the Royal British Legion club in Poole.
(7) Quickplay events. We have an evening quickplay tournament, usually the third Friday of September, using the dreaded ten-second buzzer. This is a fun event.

ii There is no need to say check
iii If the King is en prise, it can be taken to end the game
iv Stalemate rules apply
(8) Dorset Team Rapidplay Championship. On a spare Friday at the end of the league season, Martin Simons, our President, runs this fun event. This is held at Southbourne, with teams of four competing in a 7 round Swiss Olympiad style event. There is a handicap system to favour individuals with lower grades and Cash Prizes.
(9) Christmas Tournament. On the last Friday before Christmas. Come along and celebrate Christmas Southbourne Chess Club style. Its time for the annual celebration including food and chess played to the accompaniment of Christmas music.
It is usually a 7 round format, 20 minutes allocated to the game but each player's time will be determined by the grading differential between the players eg 15 to 5 minutes. There will be more prizes than players and each player will be guaranteed a prize. Turn up with your £1 entry fee at 7.15 ready for a 7.30 start.
(10) Simultaneous displays. Some of our better members take on a group of members in a simultaneous display
(11) The popular 'fun' 10 second a move tournament on a Friday in September. Everyone is welcome.
(12) Bournemouth & District Chess League Team Handicap Knockout tournament. Teams of 6 compete and although the team members may change, the average grade for the team must remain for the duration of the tournament. There is a table of Grading differences and depending on this, the higher average graded team has to win by more than the expected 3.5 to 2.5. There are tie break rules if the score is a draw.
(13) Four Nations Chess League Martin Simons, another of our members, is a member of the Wessex team who play in 4NCL. Results to date can be found on the following link http://www.4ncl.co.uk/.
(14) National Tournaments Club members regularly participate in weekend tournaments, especially the Dorset Closed Chess Congress usually held at the end of January. Others attended are Exeter (March), Paignton (September) and Torquay (August).
